Should Home Services Businesses Invest in AEO Instead of SEO?
No — not instead. For a home services business, AEO and SEO are close to the same project, and anyone selling you one as a replacement for the other is selling you the same work twice. The pages, the speed, the structured data and the local consistency serve both.
What is worth changing is emphasis. Home services buyers ask urgent, specific, local questions — "who fixes burst pipes near me right now," "how much does AC replacement cost in Palm Coast" — and those are exactly the questions answer engines now answer directly. Being the business named in that answer is worth more than being the fourth link under it.
So the real question is not AEO or SEO. It is: what do you spend on first, and what actually produces phone calls.
1. Why home services is unusually exposed to AI answers
Three things make trades different from most industries here.
- Urgency. A homeowner with water on the floor is not comparing ten links. They take the first credible name they are given.
- Price opacity. Nobody knows what a water heater costs, so "how much does X cost" is one of the highest-volume question types in the trades — and it is the exact shape of question AI answers eat.
- Geography. Every job has a location, so every search has a city attached, and models need to be confident you serve that city.
The upside is that answer engines are lazy in a way that favors you: they cite the source that states the answer plainly. Most contractor sites do not state anything plainly, so the bar is low.
2. The overlap is about 80% of the work
Here is what serves both goals at once, which is why splitting the budget makes no sense.
- A page for each service you want calls for.
- A page for each city you serve, written specifically for that city.
- Fast, clean pages a machine can read.
- LocalBusiness and Service schema, plus FAQ schema on each page.
- Consistent name, phone, hours and service area everywhere they appear.
- Steady, recent reviews that mention the service and the town.
None of that is AEO-specific or SEO-specific. It is just a properly built local site, which is what our coverage levels are for: Foundation is the five-page core, Growth adds a page per service, Maximum adds a page per city.
3. The 20% that is genuinely AEO, and it is cheap
The part that is actually new is writing style, and it costs nothing but discipline.
- Lead with the answer. "AC replacement in Flagler County runs $6,500 to $12,000 installed, and we finish most in one day." Then sell.
- Publish ranges, not "call for a quote." A model cannot quote a phone call, so it quotes the competitor who published a number.
- State response times in text. "Same-day service until 6pm, emergency calls answered 24/7" belongs in a sentence, not a banner image.
- Write your phone FAQs down. The questions your office answers twenty times a week are the exact questions being asked of AI. Put them on the matching page.
- Say where you work as a list of city names. Not a map embed.
The one-hour version
Take your five most common phone questions, write honest two-sentence answers with real numbers, and add them to the relevant service page. That is more AEO progress than most retainers deliver in a quarter.
4. What about Google Ads?
For emergency trades, ads and organic do different jobs and both matter. Ads buy you the top slot today for the searches that convert; pages earn you the citations and rankings that keep producing after you stop paying.
The mistake we see is spending on ads while the landing pages are thin. Ads send traffic to a page that does not answer the question, the quote never happens, and the conclusion drawn is "ads do not work."
Fix the pages first, or at least at the same time. Our ads management is priced per campaign — $300 setup for the first campaign, $200 per additional, $100 per campaign per month — precisely so it does not become a bundled retainer you cannot separate from the site work.
5. The spending order for a home services business
If you have limited money, spend it in this order. Each step is worth more than anything below it.
- Get your business details consistent everywhere and your Google Business Profile complete. Free.
- Get a fast site with the five-page core, written answer-first. That is a $750 build.
- Add a page per service you want calls for. $50 each.
- Add a page per city you actually want work from. $50 each.
- Add the FAQ blocks and price ranges to every one of those pages. Free, and it is most of your AEO.
- Start a steady review habit. Free.
- Then, and only then, consider ads or a blog program.
Notice that the entire AEO-specific portion sits in step five and costs nothing. That is why "invest in AEO instead of SEO" is a category error.
6. How to know if it is working
Skip vanity metrics. Three checks tell you the truth.
- Are you named when you ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google who to hire for your service in your town? Run it monthly, keep notes.
- Is Search Console showing impressions for question-shaped and city-specific queries you did not used to appear for?
- Did the phone ring more, and did those calls turn into booked jobs?
If you want a starting point that does not involve a sales call, run the free audit for the technical picture, or use the page planner to see which service and city pages you are missing. Builds start at $750, hosting is $50 a month, cancel by email, 30 days money back.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
- Should a plumber or roofer invest in AEO instead of SEO?
- No — they overlap almost entirely. The pages, speed, schema and local consistency serve both. The AEO-specific part is writing answers plainly with real numbers, and that costs nothing extra.
- What is the highest-value AEO change for a home services site?
- Publishing honest price ranges and response times in plain text, plus an FAQ block on each service and city page answering the questions your office fields by phone.
- Do I have to publish my prices?
- Ranges are enough. Answer engines cannot quote "call for a quote," so the business that publishes a range gets named and the one that hides it does not.
- How many pages does a home services business need?
- At least the five-page core, then one page per service you want calls for and one page per city you serve — usually 10 to 25 pages in total.
- Should I run Google Ads or fix my website first?
- Fix the pages first, or do both together. Ads pointed at a page that does not answer the question waste the click and lead people to conclude ads do not work.
- How do I tell if AI answers are recommending my business?
- Ask them directly. Run your service-plus-city questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google once a month and record which businesses get named.
